It is often said that the appearance of a new star in the sky presages the arrival of a great man. When the astrologers and soothsayers noticed the new star in the constellation Lupus in 1006, they prophesied the birth of a man, discovered by a wolf, who would protect his people without ever ruling them. They spoke of light; the new star (nova stella in Latin) was so bright this man would be one who would bring illumination to his people all over the world.

The new star was so bright that it was visible during the day, so bright that it outshone the moon and cast shadows at night. Many feared that this was the sign of the end of the world, and hastily crammed into churches in a desperate attempt to save their souls before the seemingly inevitable approach of judgement day.

Like the star, born out of violence and of death, the man whose arrival this star had heralded, was born &mash; not in the aristocratic families of Europe (who had all been tipped into a frenzy trying to identify which baby was to be the great illuminator), but in the distant woods of East Anglia.

The church records of the hamlet of Hatlepenham reveal the recording of the arrival of a baby boy to Sylnormod1 and Catheryn2 in 1006. Little is known of his parents, but an earlier court record of 995 reveals a "dirtie darke man" caught for "stealing breade" called Sylnormad (the misspelling is inherent in records of this time it is not known if this is the same man, but the description is consistent with the details we have from other sources).

We can say little of Salazar's life, as he was born in the Dark Ages, when few could read or write, and a little boy who was the son of a despised farmer living outside of town is not normally a subject to be written.
